Our History

Who is ISGHO

Island of Gifts and Hospitality is a non-profit organization that offers leadership skills training and job placement support, while bringing the gift of unity among refugee youth and community leaders in Nairobi, Kenya.

How we Began

Between 1996 and 2019, the Eastern region of Democratic Republic of Congo suffered numerous ethnic wars and massacres that pushed children, youth, and families to take refuge in different countries like Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya. Over the years, a great number of refugees settled in the city of Nairobi, Kenya instead of going to the refugee camps near Somalia and the South Sudan border, due to security and harsh weather conditions. The integration of the refugees in Nairobi became a challenge in terms of education, language, religion, and social economic factors, which naturally impacted their social welfare. As a former refugee himself and now author of ‘Umusore W’Intangarugero,’ Gilbert Munyamahoro found it important to change the quality of life for youth in Kenya and fellow church and community leaders in his hometown. Island of Gifts of Hospitality has the opportunity to creatively tackle the issue of people lacking a particular skill that could benefit them and their community, and empower them to become outstanding citizens and future community leaders. “The secret of all greatness is to discover what you were born to do in life and then do it. You must find out your gifts and talents.”
